Keto beef heart lettuce tacos

Not many people eat beef heart but it actually has a very similar taste to regular meat. It's cheaper and sometimes it comes with a good layer of fat that's very yummy

One of my favourite foods are tacos. Basically, because it's super easy and quick to make and everyone likes them.

The problem for me is that to make them keto you have to make the tortillas, which are a pain in the butt. There are awesome recipes that are almost identical to true tortillas, but they are extra work anyway and ain't nobody got time for that!

So, to fix the tortilla isue I always use lettuce or ham to wrap things up. Make sure you use big lettuce leaves and if you use ham use the one that's dry and has no fat, otherwise you will get your hands wet and greasy.

For the taco filling I used beef heart, this organ meat has a slightly strong flavor than regular meat and it chewier. I like it a lot and it usually comes with a good layer of fat that has a buttery flavor that I like A LOT.

I'm trying to eat more organ meats because they have a different nutritional profile than regular meat (sometimes they are better, liver is a great example of this). Beef heart for example has more thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B12 and iron than a sirloin for example. You can find the full nutritional information of this recipe below.

Vitamin B12 is actually six times higher in beef heart than in sirloin.

The organ meats I like the most are the udders and intestines but nowadays they are hard to find. I'm still trying to like liver, I think it's an acquired taste, so I keep eating it hoping that one day I'll love it. I have to say that it depends on the animal, chicken liver is the mildest in flavor, so it's the one I eat the most. If you are starting with organ meats, I suggest you hide liver in ground beef and make tomato sauce or meatballs. I actually have a very nutritious tomato sauce with ground liver and ground beef if you want to check it out: Nutritious and healthy tomato sauce

BTW these tacos are not very mexican, I didn't follow a mexican recipe to make them or anything, but the important thing here is that they are tasty and good.

Of course, if you don't have beef heart, use regular meat. For toppings you can use the usual things like cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, caramelized onion, fried mushrooms or whatever you like the most.

Happy eating!

  • Ground black pepper to taste

  1. Julienne the onion.
  2. Remember to remove the white part and the seeds from the peppers, then cut them into strips. You can use different pepper colors if you like.
  3. Cut the heart into strips.
  4. In a pan put some tallow or butter and stir fry the meat.
  5. Add the garlic and mix well.
  6. Season the meat with salt, pepper and chili powder.
  7. Once the meat is cooked, add the veggies. We add them at this point, so they don't become soggy at the end.
  8. Instead of using tortillas, we are going to use big lettuce leaves. At the bottom of the leaf you can put some avocado, the stir-fried beef heart and on top things like tomato, sour cream and cheese.
